Commissioner Gordon lives in Shelby with his wife Sherry and their Labrador, Ranger.

They have two sons, Alex (Macy) and Zachary (Anne Marie), and four grandchildren.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS  &  EXPERIENCE

Master's Degree in Public Administration and Fire Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science from University of Maryland 

Associate's Degree in Fire Protection from Central Piedmont Community College

Professional Credentials: Chief Fire Officer (CFO), Chief EMS Officer (CEMSO), Chief Training Officer (CTO), and Fire Marshal (FM); one of 11 chief fire officers possessing CFO, CTO, CEMSO, and FM designations

  

Supervision and leadership to all Divisions of the Charlotte Fire Department

Served as the Deputy Fire Chief Business Administration {Charlotte Fire Department} (served as the Emergency Management Director and Fire Marshal; managed Emergency Management, Communications, Information Technology, Strategic Planning and Research, Logistics Division, Fire Marshals' Office, Arson Task Force, and the Fire Prevention Bureau) 

 

Served as the Deputy Fire Chief of Personnel Administration {Charlotte Fire Department} (managed Human Resources, the Training Division, Health and Safety Division and Special Operations)

Led the strategic planning division in departmental growth initiatives, for Charlotte Fire Department; trained 1,200+ employees and fiscal management for a $127M budget

Member of Elizabeth Baptist Church

Serves as a Retiree Trustee (2022-2025) on the Charlotte Firefighters' Retirement System (CFRS) and previously served as an Active Trustee (2005-2018) prior to retirement in 2018; current CFRS assets are $603M and 846 retirees receiving benefits

 

Liaise with community/state leadership; ensure initiatives are aligned and deadlines are achieved
 

Certified NC Building Code Official, Certified NC Fire Investigator, and Member of Institution of Fire Engineers (MIFireE)
 

Served as Fire Chief of the Waco Community Volunteer Fire Department from 1991 until 2017; serving since May 25, 1984

 

Served on the North Carolina State Fire and Rescue Commission from 2011 until 2023 (appointed by NC Speaker Thom Tillis in 2011 and 2013; appointed by NC Speaker Tim Moore in 2016, 2016, and 2022). 
 

Joint Legislative Committee Chair for the NC State Firefighters’ Association and the NC Association of Fire Chiefs, securing several key pieces of legislation into session law

 

Serves as a Trustee (Governor's Appointee) on the Local Governmental  Employees' Retirement System (LGERS); current LGERS assets are $29.7B and 82,466 retirees are receiving benefits
